This is a work of fiction from the mind of the author and is not a depiction of anyone living or dead. Events, places and locations may be altered to fit the story line.

Freedom is never more than one generation from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in our bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed to them to do the same.

  - Ronald Reagan -

One of the saddest things in America is that there are those who are unwilling to fight for freedom. Freedom is not a right. It is a gift from the men and women who are willing to lay down their lives for what they believe in. A person who is unwilling to fight for freedom is nothing more than a slave waiting to be captured and caged. A country the size of the USA will not be defeated by another nation. It will crumble from within due to a lack of morality and the unwillingness of people to stand up to oppression.

This country was founded upon the belief that we can be free by proclamation but that is a grossly simplified view. Freedom is obtained through the sacrifice of those who are willing to stand up for what is right and oppose what is wrong. Free men will fight oppression while cowards and slaves die on their knees.

  CHAPTER ONE

“You are absolutely 100 percent sure that this can be done?” President Amber asked.

“Sir, we have looked at this from every conceivable angle and nothing can go wrong,” General Maker replied.

“And the rest of you agree?” the President asked the others in the room.

Seated in the Situation Room were the Secretary of State, Elian Far, Secretary of Defense Richard Thompson, Admiral Wright, head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Attorney General William Falkner, Chief of Staff Perry Mills, and General of the Air Force, Collin Diaz. Seated along the wall were CIA Director Tony Rheem, FBI Director Bonny Toner, and Homeland Security Director Taylor Spears.

“Sir, I think I speak for all of us in the room. We can assure you this is fail proof,” Attorney General Falkner said.

“Yes, well I’m sure those same famous words were spoken when the Titanic sailed,” the President said.

“This is not the same thing,” Elian Far, Secretary of State replied.

“No it isn’t. It is infinitely more complicated,” the President snapped.

No one spoke up. The decision was now thrust upon his desk. Years of planning, thousands upon thousands of lies, diversions, and misdirection’s to the American public were sitting squarely on his shoulders.

An unknown war against the average Joe had been slowly being implemented over the past six years and now all President Amber had to do was give the signal to begin.

“I want you, each person in this room, to give me your personal assurance that every detail has been covered, every contingency thought through and a solution ready to be implemented. I don’t want to hear from a single one of you that some aspect slipped through the cracks. Is that perfectly clear?” he said.

“I know we are ready,” Secretary of State Elian Far said, “The minute you declare Martial Law, our people will swing into action.”

“You say that, but how do you know? Are you telling me that you have the word of every commander of the National Guard that they will act on those orders? Against Americans?”

“Mr. President, they are soldiers. They will do what they are told. It has always been that way. This is no different.”

“Not particularly encouraging Ms. Far. That sounds like some of the crap we put out.”

“Mr. President, I can assure you that the Army will comply,” General Marker said.

“As can I of the Navy and Marines,” Admiral Wright added.

  “Collin?” the President said.

“Sir, the Air Force will do as ordered.”

Damn. I know how long we have discussed this but to actually do it is totally different.”

“Mr. President we can’t keep putting this off. If we do someone will stumble upon the plans and then what? We need to get the show on the road. Trillions of dollars have gone into this, are you willing to just throw all of it out the window?”

“No Ms. Far but on the other hand I am not about to implement a plan that is simply not ready. We are not talking about some little scheme to tap into every American’s phone or internet server. We are talking about declaring Martial Law on unsuspecting citizens and hauling them off to internment camps, people who have spoken out against the government, people who are going to put up resistance against a one party country, people who are going to want to fight because we are going to suspend the constitution. I’m talking about Americans who are foolish enough to believe that they actually have a say in how the country is run. Yes, it is childish to think that way. Yes, they are sheep and follow whatever they are told but there are always those that will not simply roll over and be subject to our will,” President Amber said.

“I think you are giving them too much credit. When they realize that resistance is impossible they will do just like every other country. They will do as they are told,” she insisted.

“All of you listen to me. I will make the decision when I am ready, and not one minute before. I want to talk this over one more time with the Vice President to make sure she is totally behind the plan.”

“Sir, I can assure you she is. I spoke to her just this morning and she reiterated her determination to see this through,” the Homeland Security Director said.

  President Amber frowned.

  “You talked to her?”

  “Yes sir.”

  “When?”

  “Around 9:00 a.m. this morning.”

“Really? That’s strange. I went down to her office and they said she was getting her physical at the hospital.”

“Actually sir, she was in my office. We were discussing the implementation plans.”

“Why would you be having that discussion when this meeting was already scheduled? I think you need to explain that to me Mr. Spears.”

He shrugged and said, “What can I say. She was just making sure everything was ready to go and checking all the facts.”

“Isn’t that what this meeting is all about?” President Amber asked, becoming agitated.

“Mr. President, it was nothing sinister. She was just assuring herself of the facts and wanted to make sure all the i’s were dotted and t’s crossed.”

“This meeting is over. I want to talk to the Vice President immediately. You are all dismissed.”

  No one moved.

“Are you all deaf? You can go. I have other things to do. Now if you don’t mind,” he said standing.

He was flabbergasted. No one made any attempt to move.

“What is wrong with you people?”

“Sir,” Tony Rheem of the CIA said, standing, “We would like you to implement BlueBolt immediately.”

“People, I don’t care what you what. Now get the hell out of my office,” he said, his voice rising.

Tony stood up, walked up to the President, and with one swift motion stabbed the President in the chest with a hypodermic needle.

  “What?”

“Sorry but BlueBolt is already under way. You’re no longer needed.”

The President looked down at this chest, his eyes glazed over. He tried to get to the door but only made it one step before he crumpled to the floor.

“Get the Vice President. I think President Amber just had a heart attack,” he said, feeling for a pulse.

  “Should we get medical help?”

“No, I’m afraid it was fatal,” Tony said sitting back down.

“Doctor Millard will take care of everything?”

“He certainly will. His entire family is our guest for the time being.”

  “And afterward?”

“You let me worry about that,” Tony said.

  ****

“Please repeat after me; I, Helen Clemons, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

“I Helen Clemons, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of the President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

“Madam President,” he said, shaking her hand. She handed over the Bible to the Chief Justice.

After a few minutes she stepped to the microphones.

“I know that as a nation we are all in deep shock. How do we lift our spirits after such a tragedy? President Amber was the epitome of the American Spirit. A man dedicated to moving the great country forward. I can only hope I am capable of carrying on as he would have done. God bless you and our country,” she said and bowed her head.

All in all it was a brilliant performance. She had just the right look of sorrow and humility. The makeup artist had done a masterful job of making her look distraught and humble.

She continued to talk about the great achievements the President had made. How his program had made our streets safer by limiting the number of guns in private citizen’s hands by passing legislation banning almost every class of weapon and limiting the availability of ammunition. She touted the advances in our social programs and their effect on the country. It was a sickening display of half-truths and some outright lies.

Like her predecessor, she had the same glib gift that made people believe she was sincere. Now she was the President of the United States. A plan she had launched three long years ago was going to finally be fulfilled. All of the major players were in place and the few remaining resistors would be crushed.

The hardest part of the speech was not actually laughing while she was delivering it.

  CHAPTER TWO

“That woman is evil,” General Waggoner said.

“Thomas, I don’t think I would say that out loud. You know damn well the walls have ears. If I were you I would keep any thoughts like that to myself,” General Lamb said.

Waggoner stopped and looked at his old friend. He was absolutely right. He rubbed the bridge of his nose with his thumb and finger. He was getting too old for this crap. He had served in Vietnam, Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He had seen really bad Presidents and a few good ones, come and go. A few he had actually respected and admired, most were just smooth talking corrupt politicians that had made it to the top.

Now they had President Clemons to contend with. One of her first acts was to send every officer down to the level of Captain a communication demanding that they sign a letter of loyalty to the current administration. Why was it even necessary? She was the Commander-in-Chief and by virtue of being an officer in the military such a pledge had already been made. Now she wanted a special letter signed.

Waggoner picked up the document. It was sixteen pages long, listing what was required to maintain their position. Failure to sign it and return it promptly to the President within seventy-two hours would result in disciplinary action.

“Have you signed it yet?” he asked General Lamb.

  “It is on my desk.”

  “That’s not the same thing.”

“Thomas, I have only read part of it. I need to absorb what it is really saying.”

“You’re hedging. I know you better than that. I wouldn’t be surprised if you could recite it word for word.”

“Why don’t we go for a walk and you can think a little more clearly. I’m sure some fresh air would do you a world of good,” General Lamb told him.

“I’m sick of this office anyway. Let’s go,” Waggoner said, grabbing his hat and coat.

  ****

The snow made crunching sounds as they walked along on the path that ran beside the Potomac River. Only a few brave souls were out as they made their way along the path
.

“What do you really think this is all about?” Waggoner said, indicating the document.

“I don’t know but it sounds like what Hitler demanded of his commanders during World War Two. He felt they were turning against him so he required them sign an oath of faithfulness under threat of death.”

“And you think Clemons is doing the same thing?”

“Well not exactly. Hitler was at war. The circumstances were a little different,” Lamb replied.

“Maybe she is planning on going to war and wants to make sure everyone is on board.”

“War? War with whom?” Lamb asked.

“Hell I don’t know but unless you are planning for a war or at war, it makes no sense.”

“You know, don’t you, that the majority of the officers will sign it?”

“Unfortunately I think you’re right,” Waggoner answered.

They walked in silence for several minutes, each in deep thought.

“What are you going to do?” Lamb asked, breaking the silence.

“I honestly don’t know. I have so many unanswered questions. Why is it necessary? Why only seventy-two hours to study it? Why no discussion or allowing us to ask questions on parts we don’t fully understand?”

“Oh come on. You know the answer to that as well as I do. Don’t be naive. She just wants unconditional faith and doesn’t want us to digest it fully. Why do you think it’s so long and written in legalese? Blind obedience. That is what she is demanding.”

“So I was just following orders comes into play again?” Waggoner asked.

“Asked and answered. You know damn well that’s what she is doing.”

“So the question remains the same. Are you going to sign it?” Thomas asked.

  “Probably.”

“Really? I can’t believe it,” Thomas said shocked.

  “Do you remember Albert Speer?”

“Of course. Anyone who knows anything about history knows who he was. What about him?” Thomas asked.
